Kosher accommodation in Rome

Finding kosher accommodation in Rome is less about the hotel’s star rating than about where it stands on a map. If you keep Shabbat, the walk to the synagogue decides everything else, and the booking sites cannot tell you that.

I keep a working list of apartments, B&Bs and hotels that observant guests actually come back to, and I place people according to how they live rather than what is available.

The three areas

• The Jewish quarter — the former ghetto and the streets around it. Walking distance to the Great Synagogue, and the kosher restaurants and bakeries of Via del Portico d’Ottavia are downstairs. The most convenient and the most expensive
• Piazza Bologna — where a large part of the Roman Jewish community actually lives. Its own synagogue, kosher shops, and a residential feel. Better value, twenty minutes from the centre
• Monteverde — green, quiet, popular with families, with a community presence of its own

What “kosher apartment” should mean

The phrase gets used loosely. The apartments I recommend come with a kitchen set up for separate meat and dairy — two sets of pots, plates and cutlery, marked — and are fully equipped down to towels, linen, pillows and blankets, so nothing has to travel with you.

Where a stay covers Shabbat, the practical details are checked before booking rather than discovered on arrival: whether the entrance uses an electronic key card, whether there is a Shabbat lift, whether a plata or hotplate is available, whether the door can be opened without breaking anything.

Also worth knowing

• Rome fills completely around Pesach and the High Holidays. Those dates need booking months ahead, not weeks
• Most apartments in the historic centre are in buildings without lifts, and Roman staircases are long
• If a kosher kitchen matters less than kosher food, a hotel plus a private kosher chef is usually the better arrangement

Accommodation is normally arranged alongside the rest of the trip — tours, transfers and meals — so that the pieces fit each other rather than being booked separately.
